7 Ayurvedic Secrets for Stronger, Thicker Hair

Ayurveda does not treat hair fall as a scalp problem alone. It reads it as a signal from the body — an imbalance of pitta, poor digestion, or simply too much stress. Here are seven practices that have protected Indian hair for centuries.

1. The weekly champi

A slow, 10-minute oil massage does more than condition the strands. It increases blood flow to the follicle, calms the nervous system and improves sleep quality — all of which directly affect hair growth cycles.

2. Choose bhringraj, the king of hair

Known in classical texts as keshraj, bhringraj is the single most researched Ayurvedic herb for hair. It strengthens the root and is believed to slow premature greying.

3. Wash with reetha and shikakai, not sulphates

Sulphates strip the scalp of its protective lipid layer. Soapnut and shikakai clean effectively while keeping that barrier intact.

4. Eat for your hair

Amla, sesame seeds, curry leaves, moong dal and ghee are classical hair foods. Hair is a by-product of bone tissue in Ayurveda — nourish deeply, not superficially.

5. Do not wash with very hot water

Hot water aggravates pitta and dries the scalp. Lukewarm is always enough.

6. Sleep before 11 pm

Cellular repair, including follicle regeneration, peaks during early-night deep sleep.

7. Be patient

A hair growth cycle takes roughly 90 days. Give any natural routine at least three months before judging it.
